How Sustourex works

Lune Valley, LancashireThe Sustourex project operates in a series of stages, beginning with an initial visit by project staff.

controlled energy use in hotels and restaurantsThis is followed by a detailed review by an environmental consultant from Lancaster University. This review will look at important cost-saving areas such as:

  • energy use - lighting, heating, appliances etc.
  • water use - opportunities to reduce consumption in bathrooms, WC, washing machines etc.
  • waste disposal - opportunities to reduce trade waste bills through minimisation techniques and recycling

Many other aspects of environmental performance are also considered. The Green Tourism Awards website provides more examples of cost saving opportunities and case studies about hotels that have benefited from introducing new ways of working.

Following the review, an environmental policy statement is produced and a date is set for a subsequent visit, during which the consultant will check on progress, answer questions and identify whether any additional cost saving opportunities could be acted upon.

Participating companies will be listed on the Green Tourism Awards website and all those that make progress in implementing their environmental policy statement will be presented with a certificate of achievement and an eye-catching metal plaque that can be mounted on an exterior wall of the premises.
